Tragedy in the Saint Lawrence

Mary King was Patrick and Loretta King’s second child.  Patrick had died ten years before this misfortune.  Loretta had remarried with George Sawyer, and the family lived in the Norwood-Potsdam area.   The incident was widely reported in North Country newspapers.

The development of the Saint Lawrence Seaway  in the 1950’s brought many changes to the waterway.  Much of  the land was taken over by PASNY (Power Authority State of  New York).  By examining old maps and deeds at the St. Lawrence County Clerk’s Office in Canton, I was able to approximate where this tragedy took place.  The river is still known for its swift undercurrent in the area.

  1. We lost a little boy by drowning into the St-Lawrence River in the early 60s (my cousin).
